Trampoline Pads and Safety

Depending on the quality of equipment you have purchased, your trampoline pad, or jumping surface, will last you anywhere from 3-8 years, with some repairs along the way.

As a rule of thumb, on a good quality pad, the wear will start showing at about the 3-5 year stage. At that point, you may need small repairs such as re-stitching of the edge or border, and repair of holes. Generally speaking, a hole under 2" in width does not present a hazard to users, but when it gets to that point, it's a good idea to have your trampoline pad patched, so the hole does not become a problem.

When buying a new trampoline pad, make sure that you have the exact measurements of the old one, as well as the number of grommets or tabs that are used to attach it to the frame. In some cases, a company may be able to make a custom trampoline pad, if you send them your old one.

Another feature that comes with your trampoline, but which may need replacement, are the safety pads that cover the frame and springs. These should be a minimum of ¾" thickness, and preferably more. Safety pads also need a secure method of anchoring them to the frame, so that there is no slipping, or movement from the wind that may not be corrected if nobody checks their position. The pad should cover the whole metal rod or pipe of the frame, as well as the length of the springs.

If you do not have a trampoline enclosure, then mats are also something you should invest in for your family's safety, and your peace of mind. Many manufacturers and teachers of trampoline sports, will recommend mats that are no less than 10" thick, placed for a distance of up to 10' from the edge of the frame. The shape and size of mats that are recommended, will depend on the type of trampoline that you have.

Whether choosing trampoline pads, safety pads, or mats, remember that these are items that undergo prolonged outdoor use, and any added protection against weather and sun, is a plus
