Safety First - The Trampoline Enclosure

As a parent, you want your kids to have fun and enjoy themselves, but safety is also a prime concern when it comes to using something like a trampoline, where the potential for injury increases with the enthusiasm and activity level of children. That's when a trampoline enclosure can provide peace of mind, and security for both you, and the young ones who are out there bouncing around.

Trampoline enclosures are made in a wide range of sizes to fit most shapes of trampolines, whether round, rectangular, or square. The equipment basically consists of poles or framework that hold a safety netting around the bouncing surface. When someone falls, which usually occurs under eight feet in height, they will go into the net and slide or bounce out onto the trampoline.

However, consumers and users should remember that trampoline enclosures are not meant to be used as a bouncing surface. This "rebound" effect only works due to the tension of the netting fabric, and the fact that an airborne body can be redirected when it meets a surface that has some flexibility.

Most enclosures surround the trampoline with a high quality, well-stitched netting that hangs from a framework or poles that come padded. Many manufacturers make the supports for their enclosures flexible, so that the user who falls, does not strike a hard surface with no "give".

Entry to the enclosure is done in different ways, but one of the most popular is the overlapping sleeve-style, where 2-3' of the netting overlaps at the ends, and allows users to slip in between the layers to get to the bouncing surface. This overlap area is as strong and durable as the rest of the trampoline enclosure.

As a safety measure, it has not yet been recognized by the insurance industry, but the enclosures are very popular for families with children, and also for adults who might like to see what the attraction is, but are hesitant about falling off.
